UK to pull out of EU defence procurement?

11-03-2010

If the Conservative Party is elected into government at the next election, it is likely that a number of procurement contracts will be reviewed.

This is according to former party leader William Hague, who told the Financial Times that the UK's cooperation with EU defence procurement may be called into question.

He told the paper: "We have enough on our hands without an instant confrontation with the EU.

"It will not be our approach to go and bang on the table and say immediately we demand A, B, C."

Mr Hague suggested that the pull out would be from the European Defence Agency, which is a body that tries to coordinate the procurement of arms at an EU level.

This follows recent criticism from shadow defence secretary Liam Fox, who said the Labour government's procurement programme - and specifically the Ministry of Defence's - was "operating in Wonderland".
