UK growth 'good news for jobs'

23-07-2010

Procurement jobs may be just one of many sectors to benefit from the growth in the UK economy, after the 1.1 per cent rise was described as "encouraging news for jobs".

The growth is almost double the amount expected by experts, with the construction industry performing particularly well by seeing the most rapid expansion since 1963.

Kevin Green, the chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, said the news is good for the economy and above expectations.

"The fact that we have the fastest quarterly expansion since 2006 will improve business confidence and should encourage firms to start hiring new staff," he explained.

He added that this trend needs to continue and even accelerate over the next years to make up for the reduction in public sector jobs.

The figures on UK GDP are preliminary statistics, with a full set of quarterly national accounts to be published on September 28th.
