Travel procurement 'is down'
11-02-2010
Businesses are spending less money with travel suppliers than they did a year ago, it has been claimed.
According to new research by Purchasing, three-quarters of firms have cut their travel budgets and 59 per cent said they do not expect spending to pick up during 2010.
Respondents to the survey said expertise in managing costs is the reason many procurement departments are tasked with overseeing travel spending.
However, travel procurement is about more than cost savings and requires the successful management of relationships with suppliers, as well as the negotiation of agreements.
"Travel requires supplier management as other commodities do," one respondent told Purchasing.
Adding: "The spend has a large impact to the bottom line. Contract negotiations are key and require procurement's expertise."
Some 87 per cent of procurement specialists said they had a final say in which travel supplier a company went with.
A recent survey conducted at the Business Travel Show in London by the Association of Corporate Travel Executives showed that in the UK, 51 per cent of managers were deemed to set a good environmental example when it came to business travel.
