Shadow defence secretary warns about military procurement changes

08-02-2010

The Conservative shadow defence secretary has warned the UK military could be relegated to the "second division" if it does not make changes to procurement and resourcing throughout the armed forces.

Speaking at the Royal United Services Institute in London, Dr Liam Fox said the current system is not immune from "economic realities" and is "long overdue" radical reform.

Dr Fox added: "We are at a tipping point in Britain. We need to decide if we want to stay in the first division or slide into the second division. I choose the former."

"Tough decisions will be made and there will be winners and losers at the end of the process but Britain will be safe and our interests secure," he added.

According to last year's report into the Ministry of Defence's procurement process by Bernard Gray, who was a former government advisor on the subject, the organisation will not be able to afford half the amount of equipment it plans to buy in the coming decade.
