The UK's armed forces need a revamp of their procurement processes, it has advised.
In response to an article in the Daily Telegraph, one member of the public suggested that those in procurement jobs could be crucial to improving conditions in Afghanistan.
"There should be far more frequent defence reviews and the decisions taken should be binding on government," he suggested.
Another respondent, Kenneth Armitage, highlighted that procurement procedures introduced 30 years ago have led to changes in the army.
He indicated that the "forced introduction of commercial procurement procedures" has led to troops being given "the cheapest or cheaper variant" when it comes to equipment.
It was recently announced that some US troops could be pulled out of Afghanistan prematurely if the conditions allowed for it.
US defence secretary Robert Gates indicated this may happen during a trip to the Afghan province of Kabul.
