MoD £10bn ICT procurement spend laid bare

29-07-2010

The information and communications technology (ICT) procurement spend of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) under Labour has been revealed.

Over £10 billion was spent on ICT procurement for the MoD between 1997 and 2009, according to official figures.

Defence minister Andrew Robathan laid out the figures for each year since Labour came to power in 1997 in a written parliamentary answer.

Spending per year ranged from £527 million in 2001/02 to £852 million in the 2008/09 period.

However, in recent years the ITC procurement spend has been skewed by the additional cost of PFI service charges, which added an extra £539 million in the 2008/09 financial year.

"Included in expenditure are IT services, telephone line and equipment rental and minor equipment," explained Mr Robathan.

"The cost of the Defence Fixed Telephone Service is included in the figure for PFI service charges."

His comments come as the MoD faces a significant budget squeeze as the department awaits the verdicts of a comprehensive spending review.
