Procurement at Bupa

Bupa has a group procurement function based in London, headed by the Group Purchasing & Property Director, Mark Ralf, who reports into the main board through the Finance Director. Mark has been recognised by CIPS as "one of the superstars of purchasing". The group procurement function provides a strategic procurement service. Like many corporate organisations, procurement is not mandated so key to the success of the function is its ability to engage with stakeholders, influence key decisions and deliver value.

The function manages a spend of c£400m covering corporate spend, IT and food, hotel and site services. The procurement team is structured according to these categories, with an additional team managing procurement process and systems.

The procurement function follows a best practice strategic sourcing methodology and supplier management programme, supported by a comprehensive category management toolkit – Smart Source, and a range of e-tools. Group Procurement at Bupa focuses on providing the most effective supplier base to enable Bupa to meet its strategic objectives.

Bupa has grown significantly since it was established in the 1940s by both organic growth and acquisition. As a result in addition to managing the ongoing business requirements, the procurement function seeks to assist the overseas businesses in setting up and operating their procurement functions.
